Common reasons the check engine light is on

People think that if the check engine light comes on they are definitely in for expensive repair, or their car may as well just be sent to the junkyard. This is not the case! Broken or loose gas cap

In a best case scenario the light turned on simply because you forgot to tighten the gas cap when you last filled up. If the gas cap is loose or if it does not seal properly it may allow for gas vapors to evaporate out of the filler hose, which will trigger the light thanks to the EVAP system.

Bad spark plugs

The spark plugs are what ignite the air and fuel mixture, resulting in the tiny explosion that moves the pistons. If they are misfiring or not firing at all the light will turn on as this can be a huge waste of fuel and result in your engine running very poorly.

Failed MAF sensor

The mass airflow sensor is part of the air intake system. It measures the amount of incoming air and calculates how much of it needs to be mixed with the gasoline to create the proper air and fuel mixture to ensure the engine runs properly. A failed sensor can result in a vehicle running rich, meaning it will burn excessive gasoline.

Malfunctioning O2 sensor

On the other end of the car is the oxygen sensor. It is located in the exhaust system and measures how much oxygen is in the exhaust to also help dictate the proper air and fuel mixture. Again, if this sensor fails it could result in the car running rich.

Failed catalytic converter

If problems with the O2 sensor are not fixed it could result in the catalytic converter biting the dust. This is one of the most expensive issues a car can have, but it won't fail without smaller issues occurring first.
